The Harkins Centerpoint movie theater will close its doors for good Sunday.
The closure of the downtown Tempe theater near Mill Avenue and Sixth Street is the first step in redevelopment plans for Centerpoint on Mill.
I have a friend who works there, Stacy. She’s the extremely affable and kind ticket checker that you’ll find smiling in the afternoons and evenings. Everyone should say, “Hello,” to her for me when they see her. I should be asking her what she’ll be doing now. She’s been working there for so long that I’m not sure I’m ready to see her at a different place. Perhaps Harkins will be kind enough to re-employ those who are being displaced.
Fortunately, this event will not affect Harkins Valley Art Theater, which is much further up Mill Avenue. Although the Rocky Horror Picture Show no longer takes place there—they have been showing the final cut of Blade Runner, which is lovely enough.
Adieu fair friend, buildings being what they are, ephemeral and unreal.
Thanks to Michael Monti over at 100 South Mill Avenue for picking this one up out of the slew of news that pours out of Tempe very day.
