There is a video on Current_ about female taxi drivers in Senegal—a country on the western coast of Africa. They have their own little fleet called Taxi Sisters which has been drawing a little flack from their male counterparts.

Although, a fair amount of the abrasion displayed from the video is about their gender, some of it is because the Taxi Sisters company has managed to get themselves lucrative partnerships with various hotels, giving them more prominent parking spots, closer to the building. This does give them a huge leg up on competition. But, it makes me wonder, if the other fleets had similar chances to get in, why haven’t they?

Being a female taxi driver myself, I thought this little story might be interesting to readers. Though, I’m afraid, it doesn’t really have a great deal of substance.

Enjoy.

this is an interesting thing to happen. it seems the male taxi drivers have a lot of ground to cover to catch back up. they left an opening I guess with bad service and the taxi sisters have come in to take up the space. the sisters seem better organized and better at the job. the men have some serious work to do if they want to stay in business with these sisters getting all the rides. it would be interesting to see how this develops.

Hit it on the head there, Mark.

Hacking is all about service. It's not that the customer is always right, it's that the customer doesn't like to be mistreated. Some of the biggest complaints about taxi drivers happen to be "doesn't know where she's going" or "I was stiffed!"

Being able to present a clean, well mannered face to a fare; confidence that you know where you're going, what you're about, and what you're up to; and foremost, letting them know what kind of ride they're in for (if they're asking for something outlandish) -- it all goes a long way.

Interesting. I would suggest that the issue has little to do with gender at all. The Taxi Sisters provide a higher level of customer service which allows them to build a customer base. Another advantage seems to be that the president has a clear plan for the business. It’s easy to see why the hotels have granted them preferred spaces by the entrance. From the Hotel’s perspective, having a partnership with a taxi service that provides exceptional customer service is very advantageous. They’re out to make the travelers time in the area as a whole as enjoyable as possible because it builds repeat customers and those customers will pass the word on.

The travelers come back from their trip and tell their friends, “The hotel was nice and they had this local taxi service that’s all women drivers, the car was a little small but the drivers were so nice!”

The other drivers are just using gender as an excuse for their companies lacking business sense. [/professor]

Is that a criticism or a bot? Never know on the Internet today.

Do you think that Obama is going to win because the Republicans have such a bad candidate?
Why did John McCain make his final argument against Obama... coal?
That's his closing argument? William Ayers, Rev. Wright, spreading the wealth, Born Alive, meeting dictators without preconditions, etc. all have to take a back seat so that McCain can go to Colorado and New Mexico to talk about coal? Does this more or less explain why he's going to get his clock cleaned Tuesday?
