I am Alex. I see this forum is about Mill Ave, story writing and saving the world? I have a bit of knowledge about all of the above so I figure I should join in wherever possible.
I am currently writing a a sci-fi philosophical thriller entitled Black Heaven. It's a churning sort of thing. The out of this world Aliens are hyper-humanistic.

Another Mill person? Excellent.
I've been looknig for more people who might remember it the way that it was -- as I am discovering that I have a strong need to capture the 2000-2003 Mill Avenue before the more recent changes have happened so that they can be reflected in the story. A certain number of the stores and other trappings of Mill have been crushed or changed in those 3 years after 2002 as to create a slightly different creature.
Of course, things like Java Road were already dead by that time, but I think I'll still remember that place fondly in the fiction - at least in Vex's head.

Are you liking the place less now?
When I first visited you there in 1999-2000, it felt very alive.
Last time I was there, eh was it 2002 -- it already felt more commercialized and less vibrant.
How is it now?
Where do all the good places go when they die?
Where are Ann Arbor's throng of itinerant summer hippie street folk? The Diag and State St used to be dotted with them, you could hear street musicians at every intersection and in front of Nichols Arcade. There was a Changeling MOO set in Ann Arbor that dreamily described the city as one where street musicians could still make a living. Then I brought you here to see and at that moment it was gone.
So, the spirit of old Ann Arbor asks Tempe, "How's Mill Avenue these days?"

I remember Java Road. I remember when they put in the horrible lights, and it all went bad. =( I remember Halloween block parties we didn't have to pay to get into. I remember the line in front of Rocky. =)
I'm in Coeur d'Alene now, and I'm seeing it happening here and in Sandpoint. Sandpoint used to be this place all these semi-rich hippy type folk lived. Very free living sort of place with neat-o jazz festivals and all sorts of neat stuff. They are clinging to the edge of it now. More and more "people with money" have moved to our little resort town, and strip malls and upscale boutiques have sprung up like mushrooms. Coeur d'Alene was always the place rich people came to get away, though... and Sandpoint was where they went to get away from Coeur d'Alene. But, it's sad to see the old stores go. It's odd to see a gigantic resort taking over what once was a beautiful beach area. While the blue tarp covers over the boat slips are fascinating in their symmetry, I get nostalgic trying to remember the water underneath.
Then I am reminded that it was lead and mercury underneath anyways. =)
If there is anything I miss about Arizona, it is the Mill that was. The Mill that Meow and I almost and not quite touched at for years before and after we met. It was street kids and Ace with his guitar, and rock concerts at Gibson's. Is that place still around?
