So – what does everyone think of the cranes?

Although not everyone who is reading this is from Tempe, or even Arizona proper, but I'm sure that everyone has experienced what we are in one way or another. The terrible hand of progress reaching out and delivering unto us its handmaidens of industry and construction. They loom casually over the cityscape and darken our skies with metal girders, lattices of black iron, and fill the air with the resonance of trilling cables. They are the harbingers of things to come, the bold, steel mules of the city.

And here in Tempe, they've sprung up like weeds—bristling into the sky, swinging their flanged carapaces and cables with meaning and measure. Off in the skyline, right now, I can see the Eiffel tower effigy of a pair hovering, poised; waiting for we not know what. A large crane sheltering a smaller one like a parent over a child.

While we always have to suffer construction, road repairs, or other casual civil maladies, the cranes are a new silhouette on our horizon.

But it's a different horizon that I'm wondering at.

What do cranes mean to you?

Update: This subject actually melds into something else that I’ve been pondering on for a while, and the Phoenix New Times website has a worthy story about what’s going on published right now called, “Tear Down Town: It's a knock-down, drag-out for the city's soul.”

At the moment, cranes mean a special our station filmed where we interviewed a crane operator that is working on the construction of a hospital. From her perch some 150 feet on high, she placed a fork lift ten feet in front of our producer. Most impressive, I thought.

Aside from that, I'm not sure. I'm personally for technology, and hence to some end, progress, but I do have the typical yearn for the familiar and general skepticism of change. Progress is good, but not all change is a forwardly direction after all. Unless all current venues are failure, then change can be nothing worse than a different sort of failure, but I'm not sure how applicable that could be to this situation...

Ah, cranes....at times I look up and see cranes, I think 'Oh, boy, not another one.' And I do mean look up because at this point, it's getting really crowded and you don't get a lot of chances to see them against the horizon.

But sometimes if I'm in the right position and I'm feeling contemplative, the cranes look like these huge behemoths...modern day mammoths of our time. And off my imagination goes!

If you fold 1000 of them, you get to make a wish.

To me, they mean that I can never really go home again. Everytime I visit Phoenix, something is completely different than it was before. When I was there over Thanksgiving, I got kind of freaked out because I saw a little cotton field squished up against the 101 at Indian School, and it suddenly occurred to me it was the first one I'd seen in years.
