It is that time of year, once again, and my Pagan friends are gathering to celebrate the harvest, the ripening of autumnal fruits, grains, and all the great bounty of the land. The Autumnal Equinox is upon us and the sun rests lazily, swathed in the blue skies.

I’ve been paying a visit to Prince Edward Island. Here, cradled in the waves, I have come seeking certain elements of a people expelled from the island by the British in the 18th century. The Old French, and in particular the Acadians, I’ve found have always had a peculiar take on magic, mostly divination in poetry—a revelation through words. This caused me to originally believe that I may be looking for books, but insofar revealed that it may not be quite books that I’m seeking but the words.

Here, mixed with the mélange of tales of French mariners and British severity, there is a great deal of history and strange idiomatic beauty. Even if my search for those words does not pan out, the country here is beautiful to the eye: a change of pace and difference of breadth from the burning sun and hot asphalt of Phoenix.
